My VoIP experiences...

Well, the fun has begun.

VoIP has become too tempting for me to avoid any longer. The local Radio Shack stores have been Demo'ing Vonage, and I was pleasantly surprised at how well it worked.

Another carrier here in Canada (Primus) was offering VoIP for $10 a month less - $29.99, with every feature.

So, when number portability finally arrived a few weeks ago, the hunt for a VoIP solution heated up. This past Wednesday, I took the dive, ordering Primus's VoIP offering.

I asked for a new number initially, instead of immediately porting my home number to the VoIP right away. I want to check it our first, and make sure it doesn't suck before I took the dive to fully giving up our existing POTS line. If it works, I'll port out home number to the VoIP service in a month or so.

So, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the actual phone adapter hardware arrived this afternoon, and was excited at the prospect of having a full weekend of VoIP experimentation.

So, I hooked everything up, and the problems began. No VoIP service, it seems. Yes, the hardware was pretty easy to hookup, even though I decided to put it *before* my wireless router, as was suggested, instead of behind my router.

But I couldn't get anything except a flashing read light in the service confirmation portion of the adapter.

So, of course, time to call technical support. Surprisingly, I get a support rep immediately, instead of the 30 minute hold I expected.

And I discover the problem - seems my hardware arrived much quicker them Primus actually anticipated, and my actual VoIP service isn't provisioned yet.

I ask when this may happen. "Monday, probably" is the answer. I'm tempted to get upset, but I know this is just a poor tech support guy, and it's not his fault, so I stifle my frustration and deal with it. Tech-guy says he'll put through a trouble ticket about my situation. I doubt anyone will see it untill Monday, but thank him regardless.

Surely enough, calling the new VoIP phone number listed on my signup sheets presents me with the message that "The number you are calling is not assigned".

ARGH!

I guess I shouldn't complain.. Hell, I wasn't even anticipating getting the hardware untill sometime late next week anyways, so even having it already was a bonus.

Unfortunately, it's not much except a box with a bunch of blinking lights right now.
